THAT’S HOW WE WERE

A Life of Berta Horova Ended in the Holocaust

Before the WWII Berta Horova used to live in the town of Litovel. She was a wife of the manager of the local sugar mill. Her Jewish origin turned her life to a tragedy. Berta Horova né Porgesova was born in Trebic in 1874. She came to Litovel around 1895. Her husband was a Christian - and a devoted member of the Evangelical church. The Nazis labeled such relationships as mixed marriages. Jews of mixed marriages had a hope they would be transported to concentration camps much later then others or not at all. However, Mrs. Horova did not qualify for such protection because her husband died before the war. For that reason the old lady was condemned to death. On June 30, 1942 she was sent to Theresienstadt and later on October 22, 1942 she was transported to the concentration camp Treblinka, where she perished.

Berta Horova and her husband had two daughters named Evangelina and Ctimila. They were considered as “half Jews “. During the occupation they were persecuted but were not imprisoned. Evangelina worked as a pharmacist in Litovel. In 1942 Nazis fired her. From June 1945 until 1954 she worked as a pharmacist in Mohelnice.

Information and photographs for this article were provided by Ludek Stipl from the Foundation for Respect and Tolerance, which documents also the history of the former Jewish community in Litovel, because in 1942 most Jews from that town were kept in a detention centre in Lostice and in June 1942 were sent, together with Jews of Lostice, to Theresienstadt.

The foundation obtained photographs from Berta Horova’s granddaughter. Her name is Dr. Eva Truksova and she lives in Prague.
