RT activities in November 2009
During the month of November activities of the Foundation Respect and Tolerance focused mainly on educational programs in schools. In most cases such programs includes a DVD presentation documenting the life of Mrs. Edith Carter Knöpflmacher. She was born in 1914, she witnessed first signs of Nazism in Sudetenland in early 1920s, survived Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and March of Death. After the liberation Edith returned to Olomouc, but in 1948 emigrated to USA, where she still lives.
The DVD presentation documenting her life story is a very good and effective tool, which helps to explain the tragic events and history of 20th century in our region. Students and teachers are very interested in her story and DVD program. The presentation is usually followed by a discussion, lectures and quiz in a form of play. In November this educational program was presented in high schools in towns of Mohelnice (Nov. 18th), Huzova (Nov. 23th), Lostice (Nov. 23th), Litovel (27.11) and in Unicov Technical College (Nov. 24th). Quite unusual was the presentation in the town of Huzova, which is Edith’s birth place. The presentation in the school was attended also by several adults. They had no idea, Edith and her family used to live there before WWII. They were surprised and moved. They asked to repeat the program on Saturday, so people who work during the week could also attend. The article about symbolical return to Huzova appeared on the front page of a regional newspaper and next day also in the newspaper MF Dnes. Photos from the school programs, letter from Huzova to Edith and copies of newspaper articles were sent to Mrs. Edith Carter. It will be a gift for her birthday, which she will celebrate on December 17. She will be 95 years.
