Respect and Tolerance In 2010 the Loštice synagogue underwent a mayor restoration. During the entire reconstruction period the synagogue was open to visitors and students. Main Respect and Tolerance activities included: ● The meeting with guests from the twin-town of Chrenovec (Slovakia) in the Loštice synagogue. The meeting included a lecture about Jewish history and presentation of Slovak songs. ● Presentation of the educational program for students of the Uničov College based on a participation of the Holocaust survivors from Mohelnice (Alžběta Dostálová, Jiří Fišer). February ● Presentation of the educational program for adults Banned Stories – Afternoon with Short Movies. Screening of the documents about Jewish personalities from the Mohelnice area, including the document The Diary of Otto Wolf 1942 – 1945. In cooperation with the Mohelnice Museum. ● Presentation of the educational program and screening of the document The Diary of Otto Wolf 1942 – 1945. Mohelnice high school. ● Preparation of RT exhibition There Once Was a World, documenting life stories of Jewish personalities from the Mohelnice region. March ● Installation and opening of RT exhibition There Once Was a World in the Tree of Knowledge Gallery (the town of Rýmařov). ● Preparation and realization of a three days educational and experience program The Diary of Otto Wolf 1942 – 1945. In cooperation with students of the Přerov Teachers College and Janáček Academy of Music Art in Brno. Included also a meeting with Mr. Igor Škrobal – the childhood friend of Otto Wolf. Program took place in the village of Radnice. ● The meeting with members of the international program We Are One in the Úsov synagogue. April ● The meeting with members of the Association of French Writers. In cooperation with the Olomouc Educational Institute. The meeting and talks took place in Loštice and Úsov synagogues. ● Educational program The Saved Jewish Child Thomas Graumann. In cooperation with Mr. Graumann, who was as a child saved by Sir Nicolas Winton. Úsov high school and Klopina elementary school. May ● Volunteers from Germany (ASF Servitus program) came to Loštice for three days to work in the Jewish cemetery and to learn about Jewish history. ● Students of the Center for Judaic Studies (Palacky University in Olomouc) came to study Jewish sites in Úsov and Loštice. ● Oldřich Janota concert in the Loštice synagogue enriched the opening of the exhibition Rosh Hashanah. The exhibition consisted of Tomáš Vrtal’s photographs documenting a life of the Jewish Community in Uman (Ukraine). June ● The meeting, lecture and screening of a document about anti-Semitism. The meeting was attended by public, Mayors of towns of Loštice and Mohelnice and by the author of the document. Closing remarks by rev. František Lízna. In a cooperation with the Mohelnice Museum. ● The lecture and screening of a document about anti-Semitism for students of the Mohelnice Technical College. ● The lecture and screening of a document about anti-Semitism for students of the Loštice Agriculture College. ● The meeting and screening of a document about Jewish personalities from the Mohelnice region (Edith Carter and Terry Haass) for members of the Klovel Association in Veleboř. ● The lecture and screening of a document about anti-Semitism for students of the Loštice high school. ● Preparation and realization of a three days educational and experience program The Diary of Otto Wolf 1942 – 1945. In cooperation with students of the Přerov Teachers College. Part two of the program took place in the village of Bohdalov. ● Exhibition opening of photographs by Jindřich Buxbaum in the Úsov synagogue. Buxbaum’s photographs document the present life in Israel. ● The concert of the Moravian Teachers Choir in the Úsov synagogue. July ● Volunteers from Germany (ASF Servitus program) came to Loštice for a week stay to work in the Jewish cemetery and to learn about Jewish history in Loštice and Úsov. ● The meeting with students of Olešská Art School in Prague and a presentation re: Activities and programs of Respect and Tolerance. August ● A restorer Dušan Rohlík discovered the original wall panting in the women’s gallery of the Loštice synagogue. ● Founding members and principal donors of the Foundation for Respect and Tolerance Dr. Stanton and Janet Canter came to Loštice for a weeks working visit to evaluate activities in 2010 and to prepare plans for RT activities and programs in 2011 – 2012. ● A working visit to the Museum of Romani (Gypsy) Culture in Brno. September ● Plein air for students of the Olesšská Art School in Prague combined with presentations and talks. Plein air lasted three days and took place in the village of Radnice and Pavlov. ● The Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic granted the accreditation to members of the Respect and Tolerance - Zdeňka Míčová a Luděk Štipl, to teach the Jewish history in the Šumperk Educational Center for Teachers. October ● The meetings with members of the Czech Tourists Club in Loštice and Úsov synagogues. ● Prof. Sebastian Brock from the Oriental Institute, Oxford University and members of the Olomouc Educational Institute came for a meeting and guided tour through Jewish sites in Loštice and Úsov. ● Two members of a Hollywood film crew, who worked in Prague on a movie Mission Impossible, came for a day stay to visit the Dr. Stanton Canter Library and Jewish sites in Loštice and Úsov. ● Prof. Edgar Gunzig from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, a grandson of the last Loštice resident rabbi Dr. Israel Gunzig (1899-1920) came to visit Loštice. ● Rb. Gerald Friedmann from the Hakafa Congregation in Glencoe (Illinois) came for a working visit to Loštice. The Hakafa Congregation uses the Torah, which originated in the Loštice synagogue. He met with the Mayor of Loštice and representatives of Respect and Tolerance Foundation, presented the Hakafa Congregation donation and visited the Dr. Stanton Canter Library and Jewish sites in Loštice and Úsov. ● Opening of the RT exhibition There Once Was a World, documenting Jewish personalities of the Mohelnice region. The opening took place and was prepared in cooperation with the Center for Judaic Studies (Palacky University in Olomouc). ● Mr. Jan Janků, the honorary member of Respect and Tolerance, who cooperates with the Foundation for many years, received from the president of the Czech Republic the Order of T. G. Masaryk. The TGM Order is the Czech Republic‘s second highest decoration, which is awarded to women and men for their outstanding contribution to the development of democracy, humanity and human rights. November ● Presentation of a lecture History and Culture in Loštice: History of the Jewish community. In the Olomouc Art Museum - for members of the Literary Association; in cooperation with Dr. Bronislav Hlůza and Mayor of Loštice Dr. Ctirad Lolek. ● Presentation of the educational interactive program about the Jewish History for pupils of 7th, 8th and 9th grades in the Vodní high school in Mohelnice. ● Presentation of the educational program and a screening of a document in the Litovel high school. ● Introduction of the first part of educational interactive program Jewish History and Culture in the Vodní high school in Mohelnice. The program consists of six parts and will continue until June 2011. ● Presentation of the educational program and screening of document Banned Stories in the Mohelnice Technical College. ● Presentation of the educational program Diary of Otto Wolf in the Uničov College. ● Presentation of the educational program Diary of Otto Wolf in the Center for Judaic Studies (Palacky University in Olomuc). December ● Completion of another stage of the restoration of the Loštice synagogue, consisting of insulation of the foundation against moisture, repair of plaster in the interior, removal of cement floors, installation of new electrical wiring, central heating etc. Coordination of the project, which was carried out by the members of the Respect and Tolerance Foundation in cooperation with the town of Loštice required considerable amount of time and expenses. During the reconstruction several rare original features were discovered under layers of paint and plaster, including a wall painting in the women’s gallery and a round opening for a stained glass window, niche for aron-ha codesh and Hebrew liturgical inscription on the eastern wall of the prayer room.
